Wal-Town Tour take THREE

Posted by in Doc Side, Projects

It’s true, it’s true. In the midst of end of semester insanity, the crew at überculture has decided to be even more insane and launch a third tour across Canada to kick some Wal-butt. If you’re reading this you probably already know about the Wal-Town Tour 2007 and our project, but if you’ve just stumbled here then you should really read about our initiative at our Project Site. Basically four of us characters from the film are going to split up with two going west to BC and up to…read more

Blogs and Wal-Mart

The photo on the left is one of many great photos that Luna took for us at our wedding party. We’ll be putting all 100+ of them on line sometime soon, so keep checking here. In other news, überculture members are going across the country on another Wal-Town Tour and are trying to raise cash, so if you’re reading this and are itching to donate to something worthwhile, visit the Wal-Town Site. We’ve raised $5 out of a goal of 5,000 so far…. But alas, things will be slowing down…read more

Neo-Canadianism, Embodied by Bold Leadership

Posted by in Broadsides

It’s been a while and that’s because life has been as frinetic and busy as ever. Aside from getting my POV Magazine article in on time (it’s currently on the newsstands for those curious), organizing DOC brunches and websites, writing scholarship applications for SSHRC and for the Trudeau Foundatioin ($105,000 and $150,000 respectively – fingers crossed), and oh yes, getting married last Saturday, things are relatively normal! The Underground Wedding Party, as we dubbed it (it was held in the catacombs of the Bunker – the Loaded Pictures production space)…read more

Digimart and the Curse of the White Male

Posted by in Doc Side

Last week I attended Digimart, the “Global Digital Distribution Summit,” here in Montreal. I went because, well, my research for both my current MA thesis and my (hopefully) future PhD thesis involves digital networks as the vehicle for delivering documentary film to movie theatres here in Canada. After shelling out 225 beans for my three day pass, (and after unsuccessfully begging for a “media pass”) I headed over to the marvellously fascistic (accoring to my colleague Brett, who I agree with on this one) Excentris theatre on St. Laurent to…read more

This is Just a Test

Recent revelations by a former Concordia Student Union Executive have cracked open the case of ineptitude and corruption that is the legacy of our last four years of right-wing dummies in office. The individual executive has resigned and told our school paper, The Link, that they won by scheming with the administration and that now the executvie is more interested in having drinks with CV-enhancing bigwigs than actually tending to student issues, of which there are several. Pictured to the left is the current CSU president, who presumably got to…read more

The Trouble with Fascists

Posted by in Broadsides

Throughout history there have been sociopaths that because of the combination of their beliefs, superpositioning, and their egos, have managed to establish positions of leadership – whether it has been cultural, moral or political. These racist imperialists are always apologists for theism and usually christianity and rarely are what could be considered intelligent beings. Instead, through the use of rhetoric and fearmongering, they impose their narrow vision on entire publics, sometimes entire nations. Historically, we like to cite Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin, but there is no shortage of these…read more

Lame Recovery in Three Acts, Act One

Posted by in Dispatches

Alas, dear vacuous mysterious void of cyberspace, I have been unfaithful to you – galavanting about with the likes of Cinema Politica, schoolwork, the Documentary Organization of Canada-Quebec, and scratching an already tired head for ideas for a PhD which looms nigh in the sky. The promised entry of “The Wedding,” shall only begin here, and end on other days whence these wretched self-made hallucinations of work and more work are abated. For now, there is the remnants of a beautiful trip to a certain Bulgaria to remember on these…read more

Teeny Update

Posted by in Dispatches

Update on this here bloggo: I am back in Canada and busy as hell as it is September and Cinema Politica and school have started up in a big way. Therefore, I will be trying to post a new blog about once a week, and will most likely do it on weekends. I have one more travel dispatch from Bulgaria to write and post, involving a certain wedding that took place in Sofia, expect that on Saturday. Thanks for hanging in there…

Seaside Dreamland Part II

Posted by in Dispatches

So, after some insane incidents (including Svetla not being allowed to leave Bulgaria with me last Thursday) I am back in Canada. As the work I have ahead of me presents itself in the form of nightmarish hallucinations of piles of paperwork, endless emails and swirling dollar signs connected to melting credit cards, I am comforted by the Bulgarian attitude: don’t stress, it’s not worth it. So alas, I must keep writing this here blog and not think of it as work, but perhaps an outlet for stress. Ah, I…read more

Seaside Dreamland Part I

Posted by in Dispatches

Where to start? I have been without internet access now for almost a week, so apologies for the delay in this latest travel dispatch. After Svetla and I climbed back down the mountain we spent a couple of days in Sofia seeing some beautiful buildings, some dating back to the time of the Romans. Churches, Halls, Mausoleums, and other incredible sights are found all over this historical city. After some walking around and visiting with some of Svetla’s several hundred friends here, we packed our bags and climbed aboard a…read more
