Settler Frames, Part 1 Launched
After a 2018 Curator-In-Residency sting at Concordia Unviversity’s fabulous VCR – Visual Collections Repository, where I was tasked with animating the film archives, I was inspired to keep going with the work. That initial time spent pouring over hundreds of films from various “settler cinemas” (USA, Canada, UK, Australia) was enlightening and invigorating. I ended up staging a small curated installation of some films that highlighted my developing theory of the “Five Settler Archetypes.”
Afterward, and clearly because I was avoiding my larger book project about film festivals and neoliberalism with MQUP, I applied to two Canada Council for the Arts grants to develop Settler Frames into a graphic novella, auto ethnographic prose, micro film and media essay collection, and video playlist. I received one of the grants and set about writing Settler Frames, Part 1. I am thrilled and relieved to say that part is now live, published here on my site! The other parts, including the graphic novella, will have to wait – because I was reunited with that book project, and it is nearing its conclusion (I hope!).
